Educator.

48% of drug offenders held last year were malay

1. What are your thoughts on the headline?

Why are only malays being mentioned in the headlines? Don't people of other races commit these acts as well? As educators, are we also failing to educate the malays in our community?

2. What could the adverse effect be if we accept the headline at face value?

Malays will be portrayed as law-breaking citizens, even if not all are. Educators may also be blamed for the lack of education given to malays that causes them to break the law due to lack of knowledge.

3. What is the likely motive behind publishing the headline?

It might be to get educators to pay more attention to their malay students and ensure that they are not getting themselves into trouble.

4. Why do you think we are still able to maintain racial harmony despite such headlines being published?

People understand that majority of drug offenders are malay and accept that fact. They also understand that because the majority of the drug offenders are malays, it doesn't mean that there aren't drug-offenders of other races.

Chinese love gambling

1. What are your thoughts on the headline?

Are the Chinese the only people who love gambling? Are the Chinese the only people gambling out there?

2. What could the adverse effect be if we accept the headline at face value?

The Chinese will be viewed as avid gamblers, if not addicted gamblers. Even if most do not gamble.

3. What is the likely motive behind publishing the headline?

It is probably to get educators to ensure that their Chinese students are not picking up gambling so they do not end up getting addicted to it.

4. Why do you think we are still able to maintain racial harmony despite such headlines being published?

The Chinese accept the fact that there those among them who really gamble a lot, and the community also understands that because 'Chinese love gambling' it doesn't mean all Chinese love to gamble or that people of other races do not love to gamble.

SOCIAL WORKERSSSS

1. What are your thoughts on the headline?
My thoughts on the headline is that it is kind of racist as they only mention the malays and not any other race.
2. What could be the adverse effect be if we accept the headline as face value?
Many people could be discriminating the malays and this will create a gap in our society. The malays could also be offended by this article.
3. What is the likely motive behind publishing the headline?
It is to inform teens about the amount of from drug offenses so that they will not commit further drug offenses and that they will no longer commit such offenses.
4.Why do you think we are still able to maintain racial harmony despite such headlines being published?
This is because we have formed strong bonds with our people, despite racial differences. Thus, this has allowed us to survive such problems. It doesn't matter to much to them! =D

:D

1. Reluctant to come to Singapore, Malays in Singapore are very uncivilised

2. People may have misconceptions about malays as a community.

3.  Racism against malays.

4. A mutual understanding between races.

Kevin, Yong Jie, Daniel Ho, Ryan Chew (as Concerned Parent)

1. What are your thoughts on the headline?
We will be afraid that our child will be ostracised and shunned by the public.

2. What could the adverse effect be if… face value?
Our son's life in school will be unproductive from drugs as he will distracted from studies and force him to lose focus on important things…

3. What is the likely motive behind publishing the headline?
It is to say that Malays are easily into drug abuse.

4. Why do you think we are still able to maintain racial harmony… being published?
It is mentioned in our pledge, national anthem, and we have learnt from our past experiences back when Singapore had racial riots.

CE 15-7-2013 (Terrence and Kuang Seng)

1. What are your thoughts on headline?
The headline sounds racist.

2. What could the adverse effect be if we accept the headline at face value?
People will start being racist against Malays. Or Chinese in the other article.

3. What is the likely motive behind publishing the headlines?
To alert people that more Malays are abusing drugs/Chinese love gambling

4. Why do thou think think we are still able to maintain racial harmony despite such headlines being published?
Because we still know that only a handful of them are like that.
